BMI Health Check (Body Mass Index)

BMI stands for body mass index. It is used as a screening tool and is a quick and easy way to test whether a person’s weight is healthy for their height. A BMI health check considers that people come in different shapes and sizes, which is why a range of BMI’s are considered healthy for an adult of any height given. The BMI Calculator is an easy-to-use tool which uses standard or metric measures and calculates the person’s weight by dividing it by their height squared. The result then gives the person an indication whether they are within a healthy weight range and if not, how over, or underweight they are.

It is worth noting that the BMI health check method is not suitable for use with children, due to the un-predictable rate of development.

What is a healthy BMI?

For many adults, a healthy BMI ranges between 18.5-24.9. If your BMI is 25 or more, you weigh more than is ideal for your height.

25-29.9 is overweight

30-39.9 is obese

40 or more is very obese

These ranges are specific for adults. BMI is interpreted differently for children.

Overweight BMI

Currently in England, 25% of adults are obese and a further 37% are overweight.
If your BMI health check gives a result that is 25 or more then you should be considering losing weight.
Being overweight or obese has serious implications on your health and could
cause problems such as:

  • heart disease
  • stroke
  • type 2 diabetes
  • some types of cancer
  • high blood pressure (hypertension)
  • kidney disease

It is recommended before starting a weight loss programme you should speak to your GP for support and advice on all aspects of losing weight.

Underweight BMI

If your BMI health check gives a result that is under 18.5, you might want to talk to your GP about gaining weight. Being underweight can also increase your risk of health problems such as:

  • brittle bones (osteoporosis)
  • absent periods in women (amenorrhoea)
  • iron deficiency (anaemia)
